The first stage of Fjällräven Classic is the most difficult. A steep ascent leads to the Kemptener Naturfreundehaus, then we hike over a long mountain ridge to the Hochgratbahn.

The most challenging stage of Fjällräven Classic starts at Kleiner Alpsee in Immenstadt. The first section is quite demanding: almost the entire way up to the Kemptener Naturfreundehaus is a steep climb. But once we get there, the food at the cozy hut tastes especially good.

Afterwards, the route continues more relaxed up and down a long ridge. Wonderful views down into the valley to the north and to the higher alpine peaks to the south open up along the way.

Author’s recommendation

During the steep ascent at the beginning, a break at the Alpe Gschwenderberg is a good idea: It is one of the oldest (and most beautiful) alpine huts in the Allgäu.

Turn-by-turn directions

The route starts at the Kleiner Alpsee in Immenstadt. First we hike to Bühl at the Großer Alpsee. Passing the AlpSeeHaus (tourist information and nature park center), we walk through the village, leaving the lake on the right.

Now the trail starts to get steep: after the village of Rieder, our path branches off to the left to the Gschwenderbergalpe / Kemptener Naturfreundehaus. Partly through the forest, partly along mountain meadows we hike to the Gschwenderbergalpe, which is suitable for a first stop.

Then we continue uphill: past the Hornklause and the Rabennest-Alpe, the trail continues first as a gravel path, later as a hiking trail. After a total of 7 km we finally arrive at the Kemptener Naturfreundehaus - the hardest part is done.

After the lunch break we hike on. First we go a bit downhill to the Seifenmoos-Alpe, there we turn right and continue hiking through the forest. Now we climb steeply once again to the Obere Gündel-Alpe and onto the mountain ridge that will accompany us for the rest of the stage. About 8 km of ups and downs follow over the ridge, partly through the forest, partly over sunny meadows. There are beautiful vantage points and opportunities to rest, for example at the Himmeleck - at 1487 m the highest point of the entire three-day tour.

Finally, we make the steep descent from the mountain ridge. In long serpentines we reach the valley station of the Hochgratbahn, the official end point of the stage.
